NPP promises more anti-government demo in coming weeks
19 February 2015
The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is promising more demonstrations across the country in the coming weeks on the worsening conditions in the country, following what it describes as a successful protest in Accra yesterday.
Party Chairman, Paul Afoko told Joy News "there are going to be more of these (demonstrations) and they may escalate".
He said what Ghanaians want is action and not promises as the John Mahama-led government is doing.
Thousands of NPP supporters thronged major streets of the capital in an anti-government demonstration dubbed "Won gbo demo" -- which means we are dying.
The protest march, according to the opposition, was aimed at forcing government to sit up and solve the myriad of challenges facing the country, especially the worsening power crisis now referred to as 'dumsor'.
Government has meanwhile discounted any impact the February 18 demonstration would have.
Power Minister, Kwabena Donkor, has mocked the protest march yesterday as a keep fit exercise, describing it as an empty political activity.
The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) also says the protest was not necessary.
According to the NDC, the NPP has no moral right to criticise the government of the country's power challenges -- one of the main focus for the demonstrations yesterday -- since the NPP contributed to it.
