According to him, Nelson Mandela’s death marks the passing of a very rare and great human being.

“I have to use the word solemn and indeed it is because his death marks the passing of a very rare and great human being. He showed abundantly, the high qualities of leadership which tends to be in rare supply on our continent.”

South Africa’s first black President, Nelson Mandela died at the age of 95 in Johannesburg on Thursday.

Paying a tribute to Nelson Mandela on the Citi Breakfast Show, Mr. Kufour lauded Nelson Mandela’s ability to forgive his “enemies” who imprisoned him for about 27 years.

“Nelson was a man who suffered under the apartheid system, was put in prison for over 27 years by his enemies. He should have enjoyed in his adult life but for twenty seven years he was incarcerated. He came out of prison and gained power over his enemies.”

“Normally you would expect such a man to come out exacting vengeance over his tormenters but he didn’t do that for the good of his country and love of humanity, he rather preached reconciliation, forgiveness, and looking ahead to build his society,” said Mr. Kufour.

“Like many of his contemporaries in leadership when he got power, because he was quite old, he stepped down graciously and encouraged a younger person to take over to govern the country. With his background, being a good father to his society was very rare. I did not sense pretension. I believe that he was a very pragmatic person,” he added.

He also expressed the hope that everyone will learn from his examples.
