I’ll Join NPP To Vote Against CI 78 Today – Samia
02 October 2012
The Chairperson of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Samia Yaaba Nkrumah, has disagreed with the decision by Parliament to vote for the rejection of the report calling for the annulment of the controversial Constitutional Instrument (CI) 78.
According to her, the report by the committee on Subsidiary Legislation should have been adopted.
The Member of Parliament for Jomoro in the Western region, questioned the rationale by the majority to reject the annulment of the CI 78.
“What is not clear for some of us is what happens to those whose electoral areas are not included? In the case of my constituency, there are two electoral areas that are not included and we are not sure what mechanism is put in place to include these votes or what is going to happen to them,” the legislator told Accra-based Joy FM.
She added: “So what we are saying is that we need to correct the inaccuracies.’’
The daughter of Ghana’s first president said it will be prudent for the House to ensure that nobody is left out in the upcoming elections as a result of the re-demarcation of some constituencies aimed at adding 45 new ones.
Samia said the creation of the new constituencies favours smaller parties and that concerns the CPP, however, she believes it is right to speak out when something goes wrong.
Parliament on Monday voted by majority of 81 against 56 to reject the report of the committee on Subsidiary Legislation of Parliament which identified several anomalies in the CI which had been presented before Parliament some weeks ago.
