NDC Doesn’t Need Rawlings To Know Mahama Is Winning - Bature

The Editor of the Al-Hajj newspaper, Alhaji Bature Iddrisu has questioned those who say the purported endorsement of President John Dramani Mahama by former President Rawlings is the act that would do the trick for the ruling party in the December poll.

In Alhaji Bature’s opinion, the NDC was poised for victory following the ‘spark’ injected into the party by its flagbearer John Mahama, ‘and you don’t even need Jerry Rawlings to tell you John Mahama is coasting to victory. He (Rawlings) has seen it also, so he also wants to be part of that victory that’s why he is running back. Don’t you see a vast shift in the man’s position?’

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show on Monday September 24, 2012, Alhaji Bature said ‘Jerry Rawlings has seen the Mahama fever. Who doesn’t see John Mahama is winning this election one-time? Since President Mills died, NPP have changed language. They are confused. Nana Akufo-Addo’s chances are getting dimmer and dimmer by the day.’

Alhaji Bature and fellow panelist Kwabena Agyei Agyepong were analyzing the impact, if any, of the purported endorsement of President John Mahama’s ambition by NDC founder Jerry John Rawlings during a meeting with the Volta region House of Chiefs. Until recently the former president was one of the fiercest critics of the Mills-Mahama government, only toning down with the passing away of Prof John Atta Mills on July 24, 2012.

Speaking earlier, Kwabena Agyepong said the NDC would be making a mistake if they interpreted the comment ‘John Mahama can win the elections’ to mean an endorsement of his candidature. According to Mr Agyepong, the NDC was so blinded by its own propaganda that it had chosen to put a spin on the words.

He also faulted sections of the State media, particularly the Ghanaian Times which chose to lead with the headline ‘Mahama will win in December, says Rawlings,’ when the operative words were ‘can win.’

The former Spokesperson for President Kufuor wondered why the NDC was now jubilating over the purported endorsement. ‘We all heard the NDC say they can win the December election without Rawlings. General Secretary (Asiedu Nketiah), when asked if they had invited the former president said it was not his duty, and every invited person had 10 minutes. When he (Rawlings) came, we all heard him indict the government over corruption.

‘We have all seen endorsements in this country. Swedru declaration is just one example. If Rawlings wanted to endorse Mahama in Kumasi, he would have held his hand and said vote for him, but he was talking about corruption. He said the same thing when he went to the Volta region.’

But Alhaji Bature sharply disagreed, saying President Rawlings was only sensing the wind of change and being a smart politician, is adapting his language to join the winning team.

In another development, Alhaji Bature has accused the NPP of hypocrisy in their stated claim of providing free education at the SHS level. According to the Editor of the Al-Hajj Newspaper, the NPP in one breath is accusing the NDC government of contracting too many loans and bankrupting the nation in the next in 4 or 5 years, while promising Ghanaians free schooling at the same time.

‘Where are they going to get the money?’
