NDC’s Andrew Okaikoi goes independent
18 October 2012
Andrew Nii Okaikoi, who until Thursday was the NDC parliamentary aspirant for the Okaikoi North constituency, has decided to contest as an independent candidate.
His decision follows the conclusion of party executives to replace him with Abdul Abass Nasiru.
There was confusion when the two attempted to file their nominations today.
Andrew Okaikoi in November last year defeated Abass Nasiru in the party’s primaries.
However after the constituency was split into Central and North by the Constitutional Instrument (CI 78), Mr Okaikoi said he was made to select one “under duress” and he went for the North.
However, the constituency executives last Saturday at a primary not supervised by the party’s regional executive and the Electoral Commission, acclaimed Abass Nasiru as the party’s candidate for Okaikoi North.
But Andrew Okaikoi, who said the party has done great injustice to him, tells Joy News he will contest as independent candidate in this year’s elections, describing the party’s action as “preposterous”.
“NDC is a political party that does not protect its own, and today they have done it to me. I think it is one of the greatest injustice that you can ever give to somebody that belongs to your own. I believe that the NDC as a party has been very unfair to me because I believe I have avail myself, I have even given my marriage to NDC and NDC have benefited from me more than I have benefited. “
Mr Andrew Okaikoi has since returned all party property in his possession, including a Mahindra Bolero vehicle to the party.
