NDC Has No Monopoly Over Colours – Josiah Aryeh
NDC Has No Monopoly Over Colours – Josiah Aryeh
10 July 2012
The interim National Chairman of the newly formed National Democratic Party (NDP) says they are not fazed by the rejection of their choice of colours by the Electoral Commission.
According to Dr. Josiah Aryeh, the NDP will consider their options and come out with a different set of colours to enable them get the much needed certification ahead of the December polls. The Electoral Commission rejected the black, red, white and green colours presented for registration by the NDP, saying the colours are the same as the ruling NDC; a situation which violates the Political Parties Act 574.
Section 10 of the Act, states that “…No prospective political party shall submit to the Commission for the purpose of registration under this Act any identifying symbol, slogan, colour or name which is the same as the symbol, slogan, colour or name of any other registered political party; or of the Republic; or which so closely resembles the symbol, slogan, colour or name of a registered political party or the Republic as to be likely to deceive or confuse members of the public.”
However, speaking to XYZ News, Dr. Aryeh, a former General Secretary of the NDC, said they are not perturbed since all they have to do is to drop one of their colours.
“That shouldn’t cause any hiccup at all, the Electoral Commission are the keepers of the rule and if they think that there is a possibility of confusion between the two parties then that is their decision.
“We will go back to the drawing board; it is only a matter of changing one colour or dropping one colour so it is no big deal.
“The fact of the matter is that the NDC does not have a monopoly of those colours, the number of primary colours are finite, they are not infinite” Dr. Aryeh said.
Dr. Aryeh also dismissed reports that the former first family is no longer interested in the NDP.
He stated that the Rawlingses at the right time will come out with their view on the breakaway party.
