Victims of TDC demolition exercise live in deplorable conditions

After their houses were flattened by the Tema Development Corporation, some victims of the exercise are now putting up in tents erected on the ruins.

Hundreds others are still sleeping in the open and are appealing to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to provide them with more tents.

Joy News' Joseph Opoku Gakpo reported the conditions in which people are living are deplorable.

According to him, over 20 people are crammed in a 3 meter wide UNHCR tents with the outbreak and spread of communicable diseases looming.

The victims are also complaining of mosquito bites; not even those in tents have been spared.

Over a hundred houses at Adjei Kojo, King Solomon catchment area within the Tema Metropolis were pulled down by the TDC last week in a massive demolition exercise supervised by personnel from the Ghana police and military.

The victims were said to be encroachers on a land belonging to the TDC.

Not even the demonstrations and complaints from the residents and the MP for the area Irene Naa Toshie Addo were enough to prevent the bulldozers from flattening the houses.

The residents looked on helplessly as their houses were turned into rubble. In tears, some managed to salvage a few properties which they say they will sell for their upkeep.

A desperate call for help from NADMO came with few tents and some relief items.

It is not clear yet how long the victims will live in the tents.
