38-Year-Old Kwashie Martey Wins 2012 National Best Farmer
A Thirty-Eight (38) year old Lemuel Kwashie Martey of Mannah Farms Limited in Accra, has been adjudged the 2012 National Best Farmer at the 28th edition of the Farmers' Day celebrations held at Abokobi in the Ga East District of Accra on Friday.
Mr Martey will have for his prize, a three bedroom, fully furnished house on a litigation-free land sponsored by the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) and a pick-up truck.
51-year-old Elder Enoch Tei from the Greater Accra Region was the 1st runner up while Ellen Attiah, a 28 year-old farmer from the Upper East region, was the 2nd Runner up.
This year’s National Farmers Day award was held on the theme: “Grow More Food: Strengthening farmer-based organizations for marketplace bargaining power”.
A total of 74 farmers and fishersfolks were honoured for their exceptional contribution to the economy.
In his address, the 2012 best farmer said he is encouraged by the recognition.
“I want to dedicate this award to my mum, who throughout her life has worked as a farmer and has preserved the pace for us to come and take over. I want to challenge all the young ones; the young men who are energetic like me, we shouldn’t wait to run out of energy before we think of going into farming. Please come and let us move agric to a different height,” he said.
