Ashanti MPs Endorse Nana
18 August 2014
The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Antwi Boasiako, alias Wontumi, has thrown the support of the entire regional executives, constituency chairmen, members of the National Council and MPs of the party in the Ashanti Region behind the candidacy of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the 2012 NPP flagbearer who is seeking re-election to lead the party for the 2016 general elections.
“It is Nana Akufo-Addo’s time,” Chairman Wontumi declared in Kumasi on Friday when Nana Addo met the delegates.
According to Chairman Wontumi, when the results of the August 31 Special Electoral College and the October 18 presidential primary of the party are declared from the Ashanti Region, “none of the other aspirants should think that we hate them. It is simply not their time. When their time comes, we will support them also, but not now.”
Flanked by his 15 regional executives, Chairman Wontumi recounted how he, together with some regional executives and some constituency chairmen who had never supported Nana Akufo-Addo, were made to see the reality on the ground when he sought to become Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman.
“When I wanted to be regional chairman, everywhere I went the grassroots told me point blank that because I have never supported Akufo-Addo they were not going to vote for me, even though they liked me,” he disclosed.
He added, “The support Nana Akufo-Addo has in the party is very strong, and as such I had no choice but to listen to the voice of the people, because it is the voice of God. We are listening to the voice of the grassroots and the grassroots say it is Akufo-Addo they want.”
Nana Taunts Mahama
Nana Akufo-Addo says Ivorian leader, Alhassan Ouattara, who is 72, despite his age, is performing far better than his youthful counterpart in Ghana, President John Mahama.
Nana Addo argued that it was not true that youthful presidents could perform better than their colleagues who were advanced in age.
Using the Ivorian and Ghanaian presidents as a case study, Nana Addo stated that it was evidently clear that President Ouattara was miles ahead of President Mahama in terms of managing the affairs of their repective countries.
The NPP bigwig applauded the Ivorian President for implementing better policies and programmes which had landed his country on the path to prosperity after almost a decade of civil strife.
He said the Ivorian situation was directly opposite to what pertained in Ghana now, “where so-called youthful President Mahama has plunged the country into unprecedented economic mess due to ineffective leadership and corruption.”
Nana Akufo-Addo stated that if a 72-year-old President could get things done perfectly for Ivory Coast, then he (Nana) who is just 70 years old could easily manage the affairs better than President Mahama who is 57 and calls himself a youth.
He emphasised that experience, knowledge, patriotism, hard work and commitment to duty were needed in any leader that desires to shine, and luckily, he (Nana) boasts of all these key traits.
Blast Critics
The two-time NPP presidential candidate vehemently challenged claims that he is old, weak and inactive to lead the largest opposition political party for the 2016 national polls.
He stressed that he doesn’t walk with the help of a walking stick, adding that he was fit and strong for the work ahead so the NPP faithful and his admirers should treat allegation of his ill-health with the contempt it deserves.
“This is me, I don’t walk with the aid of a walking stick, I am strong and healthy for the party work ahead,” Nana Akufo-Addo told thousands of charged NPP supporters at the Centre for National Culture in Kumasi on Friday.
The NPP guru, who was explaining his vision to major stakeholders in the party, including delegates ahead of August 31 NPP polls, said he is physically and mentally strong to lead the party to victory in 2016.
Better Ghana
Nana Akufo Addo said the NDC promised a better Ghana for the citizenry but after winning political power, President Mahama and his team had failed woefully to deliver asking, “Where is the ‘Better Ghana’ he promised you?”
Severe hardship, he observed with pain, was now the order of the day in Ghana, bemoaning the lack of jobs for the youth and the collapse of all the social intervention programmes that the NPP introduced to better the lives of the people.
Tribal Voting
Nana Akufo-Addo charged Ghanaians to desist from voting for people according to their tribal affiliation, stating that Ghana needs a competent, experienced and hard working person to rescue the country from its problems.
Third Time Lucky
He appealed passionately to the NPP delegates who have voting right to do him an honour by voting massively for him during the upcoming party polls.
“I will be third time lucky in 2016,” the two-time NPP flagbearer who sounded confident, told teeming party supporters who shouted ‘Nana oo Nana ooo.’
Dream
The NPP big man said he has the dream of transforming Ghana into an industrial economy whereby jobs would be created for the energetic youth to play leading roles to develop the country.
Nana Addo said he would win the upcoming NPP primary and go ahead to win the 2016 polls to make education, especially at the SHS level, free and also introduce programs to make the people enjoy life.
The programme was attended by NPP bigwigs like Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, F.F. Anto, Chairman Wontumi, Dr. Addo Kufuor, NPP MPs, NPP regional and constituency executives among other leading party members.
