EC connived with NDC to disqualify me – Akua Donkor
19 October 2012
Madam Akua Donkor, standard bearer of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) has accused the Electoral Commission of conniving with the governing National Democratic Party to disqualify her from taking part in the December 7 election.
According to Madam Donkor, NDC supporters at the Electoral Commission burst into laughter and shouted ‘we’ve taken you out’ even before she went in to see Dr Kwadwo Afari Gyan to submit her forms.
Making the claim on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show a day after she was disqualified for what the EC says were improperly endorsed forms, Madam Akua Donkor insisted even if there were errors in her forms, she deserved a second chance to correct her errors. After all, she argued, even the EC, with offices across the country, had problems organizing the voter registration exercise.
She showed this reporter and other staff of Adom FM a Payment Order made out to the Electoral Commission worth Ghc10,000 from the Kumasi main branch of the Ghana Commercial Bank, order number 0009015960504, from “Honourable Akua Donkor” on October 17, 2012 as well as four standard sized photographs as evidence of her preparedness to partake in the elections.
“At first they thought I couldn’t pay, but when I showed them the Order, they got scared and decided to take me out. Because they want to continue stealing our money, they have even shared some at the EC so they disqualify me. But I will still fight them.”
She has threatened to sue the EC for an extension of time to enable her correct the error in the form.
The 58 year old farmer and philanthropist burst onto the political scene a few months ago with promises to make virtually everything free for Ghanaians if voted President on December 7.
Among the litany of promises was a pledge to provide journalists and teachers with free cars and petrol. She also promised to demand an accounting from both the governing NDC and the NPP of funds accruing from the exploitation of Ghana’s mineral wealth, which in her opinion should be enough to pay for everything.
Farmers over 40 years would also be bussed free of charge to withdraw their monthly allowance from the state.
As things stand though, all of these pledges appear to be still-born.
