Volta Chiefs mad over wrongful attacks at Ekumfi Narkwa
28 September 2012
The Volta Regional House of Chiefs (VRHC) has expressed disappointment at government's inaction and media silence over the wrongful attack of Voltarians in Ekumfi Narkwa in the Central Region.
According to them, the silence over the issue was worrying, especially after police investigations had exonerated the Ewe community over the murder of Ebusuapanyin of Narkwa Asona Royal Family, Nana Kojo Eguasiah.
{sidebar id=11 align=right}This was contained in a press statement copied to DAILY GUIDE and signed by the secretary of the VRHC, C. D. Kwadzotsey.
{sidebar id=10 align=right}The Ewe community was accused of complicity in the murder and hence attacked by Ekumfi Narkwa citizens.
According to the statement, this position was taken at an emergency meeting of the standing committee of the house a few days ago.
As a result, the house went on to serve the presidency a letter, appealing to government to look into the matter, as soon as possible for justice to prevail and for those who lost family members or property to be appropriately compensated. However, the house is yet to see any of its requests granted.
A few months ago, Ewe settlers in Ekumfi Narkwa were erroneously accused of killing a 60¬year-old clan head, Nana Eguasiah and therefore attacked.
Many of them were seriously injured while others lost their lives and properties.
The statement therefore noted, "With the arrest of the real culprit, a native of Narkwa, the home is shocked that no official action has been taken and no effort is being made to compensate, the victims."
More so, it added, "silence on the part of the media and especially the human rights activists in this country are even more surprising'"
The house claimed it was reliably informed that the incident was not an isolated one but a norm in the community which raised cause for concern.
The chiefs also appealed to the Ghanaian media and human rights activists to join in the campaign for justice and fair treatment.
