Breast Cancer Education Launched

Section of students of Toase SHS during the breast cancer programmeA NATIONWIDE breast cancer education program for female students in senior high schools is currently underway.

A brainchild of Breast Care International Ghana and the Peace and Love Hospitals, the laudable initiative has taken off in the Ashanti region.

The Toase and St Monica’s senior high schools have already benefitted from advice from the team of breast cancer experts who are touring senior high schools in the country.

Briefing DAILY GUIDE, Dr. Beatrice Wiafe Addai, President, Breast Care International, said her group had observed that breast cancer awareness among females in the country was very low hence the decision to tutor young girls about the disease.

She said ignorance had contributed to many breast cancer related deaths in Ghana.

Dr. Addai, who is also the CEO for Peace and Love hospitals, said her group had decided to target young girls in SHS so that they would be enlightened about the disease at a younger age.

“This way they can avoid becoming victims of breast cancer,” she added.

Dr. Addai who is noted across the world for her breast cancer awareness campaigns said the young girls will have the chance to educate their parents and peers about the deadly disease adding “early detection and prompt action is the key to fighting breast cancer.”

As part of the educative programme, participants will receive information about the signs and symptoms of breast cancer and how to conduct self breast examinations. They will also be given free breast cancer screenings.

“Some of the students at Toase and St Monica’s SHS had lumps in their breasts indicating the programme can help save lives if sustained,” she said.

A staggering GH¢3,000 was expended on the program from Dr. Addai’s own coffers.

She passionately appealed for more assistance from corporate bodies, individuals and old students associations to help her group sustain the laudable project adding “breast cancer mortality rates in advanced countries have dropped sharply lately due to more education on the disease.”
