President Mahama to name Veep, Tuesday

Photo ReportingBarring any last minute hitch, President John Dramani Mahama will send communication on his choice of Vice President to the Speaker of Parliament on Tuesday.

So far officials at the Presidency are tight lipped on whom is likely to be the choice of the President.

However, addressing members of the diplomatic corps in Accra Monday, President Mahama hinted that his choice of Vice President will be made public this week.

He told the envoys that Tuesday would exactly be one week after the demise of the late President and noted that following wide consultations, the name will be presented to Parliament this week.

They include Dr Kwesi Botchwey, a former Minister of Finance; Ms Hannah Tetteh, the current Minister of Trade and Industry; Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development.

Sources in government confirmed to graphic.com.gh in Accra Monday that the President will make the selection of the Vice President in consultation with all the major stakeholders in the NDC and would communicate same to Parliament on Tuesday.

The position of the Vice President became vacant following the elevation of the then Vice President John Mahama to the high office of the President after the death of President Mills at the 37 Military Hospital on Tuesday July 24, 2012.

Article 60 (10) of the 1992 Constitution states that “the Vice President shall, upon assuming office as President under clause 6 of this article nominate a person to the office of Vice President subject to approval by Parliament.”

Article 60 (1) of the 1992 Constitution also states that there shall be a Vice President of Ghana who shall perform such functions as may be assigned to him by this Constitution or by the President.

Why are we blaming Rawlings for telling the truth? Why do we as people hate to hear the truth?Rawlings is not my favourite person when it comes to politics and though he might have been too blunt in the way he communicated his message, he was right. Rawlings said;

Families Clash Over Mills' Burial

{sidebar id=10 align=right}There seems to be confusion over which of President Mills’ family members hold the legitimacy to perform his final funeral rites.

Family members based in Cape Coast and those at Ekumfi-Otuam all in the Central region are yet to come to a compromise on when and where the man should be buried.

Government is apparently engaging the family from Cape Coast in discussions relating to the funeral of the late President.

The head of the President’s family at Cape coast, Abusuapanyin Ato Kakraba insists President Mills was not from Otuam and wonders why those from Otuam are claiming ownership to his body.

But Nana Ankomah VIII who is one of the elders in the Family based in Otuam is challenging this claim.

According to her, she will ensure that the right thing is done or will place an injunction on the burial of the late President.

Meanwhile, a member of the planning committee for President Mills’ Funeral, Nana Ato Dadzie has however assured that consultations will be made towards resolving the confrontation.

The burial of the late President has been scheduled to take place between 8 - 10 August but government is yet to announce a final burial place for the late President Mills.
