Otabil is running away like a coward -Tony Aidoo
{sidebar id=10 align=right}The Director of Policy Monitoring and Evaluation at the Presidency has admonished the General Overseer of the International Central Gospel Church, Pastor Mensa Otabil to be courageous “and stand by his living word”.
“You have stood over the years in public used the pulpit and the media to present yourself as a man of wisdom. You have used the bible to further your own cause and when your words catch up with you, you go on the attack” he added.
Pastor Otabil has condemned what he says is the evil attempt to expose him to public ridicule by some members of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The preacher’s comment comes in the wake of a number of audio tapes in which he was heard ridiculing and criticizing the much espoused free SHS policy of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
At a press conference in Accra Monday, Pastor Otabil lamented over what he said was the doctoring and manipulation of his sermons for political expediency and appealed to President Mahama to call his people to order.
In a rebuttal, Dr. Tony Aidoo on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme said Pastor Otabil stands to be praised or condemned by his own words.
According to him, the preacher man is full of contradiction to the extent that his (Otabil) own theology has internal contradiction.
Tony Aidoo indicated that so long as Pastor Otabil has presented himself as a man of wisdom and gained popularity from it, “your words will be used; don’t blame President Mahama, blame yourself”.
Aidoo described the preacher man as a coward who was running away from his own words.
He averred that Otabil's press conference was only to court public sympathy and to salvage his reputation.
The presidential staffer contended that Pastor Otabil's theology has lost relevance since according to him it is based on “metaphysics nonsense” which attributes everything that happens on earth to the will of God.
On the use of Otabil's sermons for political campaign ads, Tony Aidoo said Pastor Otabil’s sermons are public property and any group of individuals can use it in their political campaigns.
“When you put those words in the public domain didn’t he know it will have some influence? He should have the courage to stand by his words and stop diving for cover”.

NDC group parries calls to take out ‘Otabil advert’
{sidebar id=10 align=right}Education Watch, an affiliate of the governing NDC, has refused to back down on its quest to use the voice of Pastor Mensa Otabil to project a certain course in the run-up to the December elections.
A sponsored advert by the group has the voice of the respected man of God ostensibly ridiculing the much touted free SHS policy by the opposition NPP.
The advert was preceded by a widely circulated tape on the same issue where Pastor Mensa Otabil was heard casting doubt about the feasibility of the policy.
Meanwhile, the supposed author of those words, Pastor Mensa Otabil who is the General Overseer of the International Central Gospel Church, says what is being attributed to him has been doctored.
He addressed a news conference Monday saying, “This is defamatory, this unethical, this is criminal, this is malicious, it is Machiavellian and it is evil. It is a violation of grave impunity for any individual to seize a person’s thoughts without their consent and use it in a way that seeks to expose them to public hostility and disrespect.”
He therefore called on President John Mahama to rise up and speak on this issue because “the perpetrators of these blatant acts of impunity are largely affiliates and surrogates of your party”.
But the Executive Director of Education Watch, Kofi Doe Lawson told Evans Mensah on Joy FM Top Story later the day that they have no cause to stop airing the advert.
They argued that they got the audio through legitimate means, and its contents are for public consumption.
He insisted that they would only withdraw the advert if Dr Mensa Otabil says the voice does not belong to him. Mr Lawson also wondered what the "current position” of Dr Otabil is on the free SHS.
“If he says the voice does not belong to him, ok, and he is not the author of those words, then [we will withdraw it] ok, but if he is the author and he has made those speeches over time, some time ago, then it is a different thing.”
A Senior Associate Pastor with the ICGC, Rev. Kofi Okyere, speaking on Top Story, said if it becomes necessary, the Church would formally write to President John Mahama to call his men to order.
But he was hopeful the president would “respond to [their request] positively”.
He insisted the statement was made about 10 years ago, which has been cut and pieced together to give a "particular understanding" to the message.
He called on Ghanaians to “respect” the views of the man of God, describing the advert as not been fair, adding, “I think we should play it fair”.

Official: 14 perished in Melcom disaster; 81 were trapped
{sidebar id=10 align=right}Rescuers in Achimota have finished sorting through the rubble of the five storey Melcom building that collapsed on Wednesday, November 7.
Addressing the media at the scene of the incident Sunday evening, Ghana Armed Forces Public Relations Director Colonel M'bawine Atintande announced that the number of casualties recorded in the disaster stood at 14 as of Sunday, a figure lower than had been expected.
Colonel Atintande said out of the 81 persons removed from the wreckage alive, 54 have been discharged from the hospital while of those currently receiving medical care, 13 have sustained serious injuries.
The GAF Director of Public Relations said that having reached ground floor, the team will continue their efforts to clear the site of all debris.
In light of an ongoing investigation, he also asked the public not to crowd the site. The debris is integral to an ongoing investigation, he explained, and those caught loitering around the site will be punished.
The Israeli team of experts, which arrived Thursday to assist in the rescue efforts, left the country when the mission became less complex.
The Deputy Health Minister Rojo Mettle Nunoo praised all those who took part in the rescue operations. He expressed optimism that the hospitalized victims would be discharged in due time.
Before the press briefing commenced, a minute of silence was observed in memory of the 14 people who perished in the unfortunate incident.
In a related development, the management of Melcom will address the press on Monday afternoon at Melcom Plus in the North Industrial Area.
