NDC doesn’t want pretenders; Mutala fires Rawlings
Last month, former President J.J Rawlings endorsed President John Mahama ahead of the December polls; but in another breath, the same Rawlings has shown enormous support and affection for Mahama’s opponent National Democratic Party being led by the wife, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings.
His seeming dilemma has incurred the displeasure of many in the ruling National Democratic Congress, and the party's parliamentary candidate for Nantong, Mutala Mohammed thinks the party should be bold and stand up to Mr Rawlings.
“We should tell him that it is enough,” Mutala Mohammed told Evans Mensah on Joy FM’s Top Story on Monday.
He pointed out that Mr Rawlings does not hold the key to who becomes the eventual winner in the December 7 elections.
“Nobody can help him (Mahama) win this election except God, and that is one thing those who think that they are the paragon of Ghanaian politics, and if they don’t support you, you will not win an election should be rethinking.”
Even though election watchers have not discounted Mr Rawlings' support-base in the party, Mohammed reiterated that President John Mahama is “not relying on mortal being” but on God to win the December elections.
He emphasized: “We need every single person in NDC, but we need people who love the party, and not those who are pretending to love the party.”
He was certain that Rawlings’ support for Nana Konadu was just a cover up, suspecting that the founder of NDC was rather “endorsing Nana Akufo-Addo” who is the flag-bearer of the main opposition New Patriotic Party.
Meanwhile, a political science lecturer at the University of Ghana Dr. Bossman Asare has told Joy News the NDC would be the beneficiary if the party learn to treat their differences inside their chamber.
“Generally I think the party should be very quiet on it… I think the party should tone down…because if you are not careful you are going to escalate it and the grassroots supporters are going to know about it and that will not augur well for the party in the upcoming elections.”
He noted if the NDC, as a party, are going to dwell on Mr Rawlings and Mrs Rawlings, “the elections is going to be really bad for them”.
Dr. Bossman also thinks it would be a bad idea for the NDC to expel its founder, Mr Rawlings.
In another development, members of the government communications team have accused the main opposition NPP of actively promoting the course of the breakaway NDP.
They claimed the impressive crowd that thronged the Kumasi Sports Stadium for the NDP’s congress were rented – that NPP paid the bill and printed T-shirts for its supporters to pose as delegates.
But NDP head of communications Hilarious Abiu has denied the allegation, who said the NDC is "actually in a state of denial”, stressing that the NDP is now a “force to reckon with…and is in for serious business”.
