He has, therefore, urged Ghanaians to conduct themselves peacefully in the electioneering and on election day to maintain the prevailing peace in the country.

“It is only God who installs a chief. It is God who will give us the one who deserves to lead us. We have to put everything in the hands of God to lead us,” he said.

President Mahama made the statement on Saturday at a durbar of chiefs and people of Tarkwa in the Western Region as part of his thank you tour for their support during the funeral of President John Evans Atta Mills.

He passed through Takoradi on his way to Tarkwa, where he was welcomed by an enthusiastic crowd at the Takoradi Market Circle.

The crowd defied the early morning showers to wait for the arrival of President Mahama and his entourage.

Motor riders displayed their riding skills to demonstrate their joy at the arrival of the President.

People, some carrying their children, lined up the streets while others climbed storey buildings to catch a glimpse of President Mahama who stood in his open-top vehicle to acknowledge their cheers.

President Mahama said the late President Mills had acquitted himself as a man of peace, tolerance and humility and as a politician who would not respond to insults.

He, therefore, said the greatest tribute that Ghanaians could pay the late President Mills was to ensure that they refrained from any acts that could create confusion in the run-up to the election.

Mr Mahama said President Mills had promised to put in place the necessary mechanism to ensure free, fair and peaceful elections this year.

He reaffirmed his resolve to continue from where the late President Mills left off to ensure peace, fairness and transparency during the election.

President Mahama assured the people of the Western Region that he would continue all the projects started by the late President Mills, including the gas project, the rehabilitation of railway lines and the expansion of the Takoradi Port.

That, he said, was crucial because the Western Region contributed significantly to the country's economic growth, and "we will do it for you because you deserve it".

President Mahama later visited the house where the late President Mills was born and raised at Tarkwa Nzema Line.

The residents crowded the one-storey house to receive President Mahama and his entourage.

He entered the house and had some discussions with the people in there.

The President of the Western Regional House of Chiefs, Awulae Attibrukusu IV, called for unity in the country to maintain the prevailing peace in the country.

He stressed the need for Ghanaians to support President Mahama and his team so that they could prosecute the development agenda of the country for the good of all.
