Nana Addo exchanging pleasantries with Alan KyerematenK’si Market Women Cry To Nana

21 July 2014

WOMEN AT the Kumasi Central Market on Saturday asked Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the 2012 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), to save the country from its present predicament, affirming that in him they had put their trust.

The women, who are traders, made the call when Nana Addo visited the market to console those whose stalls, shops and wares were consumed in the ferocious fire that gutted portions of the market Thursday night. Most of them had lost their sources of livelihood through the fire.

When they sighted Nana Akufo-Addo, the women hurriedly left their few wares remaining and rushed to accord him and his team a rousing welcome, to the surprise of many.

Ideally, Nana Akufo-Addo and his team were expecting the traders to show mournful faces following the calamity that had befallen them, but it was a different scenario altogether.

The traders, upon seeing Nana Akufo-Addo in their midst, started singing victory songs amidst chanting of Nana Akufo-Addo’s name all over the vast market.

At a point, the entire market virtually turned into a political rally ground as the excited traders started singing NPP tunes with some of them waving the party’s paraphernalia.

According to the traders, their living conditions had been worsened by the challenges of the economy, making them more impoverished than ever, and noted that there appeared to be no end to the suffering in sight.

The women said they believed their woes would be exacerbated, now that their working capital had gone down the drain. They intimated that Nana Addo remained their hope for a turnaround in their lives.

An elated Nana Addo, who was mobbed by the enthusiastic market women, indicated during a response that they as Ghanaian voters, they have the power to change the current economic woes and destiny of the country in the thumbs.

He encouraged the traders to trust in the Lord and rally behind the NPP, which he noted, could bring about the needed change being hoped for.

Nana Akufo-Addo, was accompanied by party bigwigs like Bernard Antwi Boasiako, aka Chairman Wontumi, NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman; Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, NPP Chairman for Afigya-Kwabre South; Isaac Asiamah, MP for Atwima-Mponua and Maxwell Kofi Jumah, aka Kofi Ghana, former MP for Asokwa.

Nana Addo, said he was worried about the frequent fire outbreaks at the market which often destroys valuable goods belonging to the traders.

His security detail had a hectic time controlling the crowd that jostled one another to catch a glimpse of their role model and mentor, who is gunning for re-election to lead the NPP in the 2016 general elections.

A journey of three minutes to the part of the market razed down by the fire, took Nana Addo more than 20 minutes to reach there as a result of the swelling numbers of the enthusiastic crowd.

Chairman Wontumi pledged 100 bags of cement for the re-construction of the traders’ shops and stalls.

Nana Meets Alan

Earlier in the day, Nana Addo and one of the contenders of the presidential race for 2016 on the ticket of the NPP, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, exchanged pleasantries in an atmosphere of conviviality.

That was during the funeral ceremony of the late father of Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobby held at the Kumasi Jubilee Park.

Both men shook hands, laughed heartily and cracked jokes, apparently to indicate to their supporters and followers that politics is about choice of ideas and decision-making and not hatred.

The funeral rite was also attended by high-profile personalities, including the National Chairman of the NPP, Paul Afoko and Kwadwo Okyere Mpiani, former Chief of Staff.
