Recruitment In The Police Service

ASP Effia Tengey

Many people have been victims of recruitment fraud over the years, whilst many more continue to suffer great financial losses through this fraudulent activity. Fraudsters in recent times do not have boundaries within which they operate, even when it has to do with the police.

One area fraudsters lately take undue advantage of is police recruitment where innocent and unsuspecting individuals are swindled under the pretext of getting them enlisted into the Service. Victims eventually realize that people they dealt with had no influence or input whatsoever on the entire recruitment exercise.

There have been instances where victims are alleged to have paid monies to the tune of GH¢3,000 and even more, to fraudsters in their (victims’) quest to be recruited into the Police Service. A typical case in point was the arrest and prosecution of some suspects of a police recruitment syndicate, including some police personnel, at the Police Hospital, where prospective recruits had assembled at about 2:00 am to undergo purported medical screening as part of the recruitment process. Many people had also been prosecuted and convicted of such fraudulent activities in the past.

It must be stressed that the Ghana Police Service does not employ agents to recruit people on its behalf therefore, people who easily fall to the schemes of such fraudsters normally do so at their own risk. The public must be extra vigilant and watch out for such miscreants.

Police Service Regulation 2012, C.I 76, defines recruitment as “the appointment of a person who was not previously a member of the Service to vacant posts in the Service.”

The Service recruits people from time to time through its Human Resource Development and Training Directorate, depending on the vacancies available and the special Human Resource needs of the Service. After a considerable assessment of its various needs, the Service, through its Public Affairs Department, places announcements in the media for the general public, where interested applicants could apply. The recruitment may be targeted at professionals from all disciplines or a general enlistment exercise.

Nationality Of Applicant

For a person to be eligible for recruitment, he should be a citizen of Ghana and without any previous convictions of offences involving moral turpitude, dishonesty or fraud or who has not been dismissed from any public service or employment. In other words, the applicant must not have any criminal records.

Personal Data Requirement

Basic information required of a prospective applicant includes some personal details such as name, date and place of birth, home town, name and addresses of parents, if previously employed, the name and address of employer and reasons for leaving the employment, previous convictions and any other information that would be required by the Police Administration. For general enlistment exercises, the minimum age is 18 years and maximum is 25.

Physical Body Requirement

The applicant must be physically fit by police standards. The heights of applicants are also important with height limit of 5 feet 8 inches for males and 5 feet 4 inches for females.

Academic Qualifications

He/She must be a graduate of the Senior High School with impressive grades – usually four credits, including English Language and a pass or better in Mathematics. However, it must be noted that these requirements could be revised from time to time.

Interested persons who satisfy these basic requirements and possess the requisite qualifications prescribed in the job opportunity created could apply by purchasing a police recruitment form either from accredited post offices across the country or any other place as may be specified in the announcement.

After a successful completion of the form, the publication will also indicate designated points where such a form could be submitted. Applications are then processed, short-listed and the deserving ones are contacted at a later date.

To be continued.
