The recently appointed Sole Commissioner Justice Yaw Appau says he will deliver on his mandate to save the public purse and has asked all critics to be rest assured that the office would work in a nonpartisan manner to achieve the desirable results.

In an exclusive interview with Kwami Sefa Kayi, on Peace FM’s morning show ‘Kokrokoo’, the Appeals Court Judge who has been released by the Chief Justice in order for him to concentrate on his new job, indicated his resolve to get to the bottom of the controversial judgment debt saga.

President John Dramani Mahama on Monday swore into office Justice Yaw Appau, as the Sole Commissioner of Judgment debt. His main task is “to investigate the judgment debt cases the nation has been confronted with”.

Justice Appau is entitled to work with any experts, consultants among others, including security support.

But less than a day into his new role, the Sole Commissioner has been labeled an NDC cadre and a former Deputy Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, and thus might be partial in his duties.

Responding to the accusation, Justice Appau said they do not come to him as a surprise. He disclosed that he opted out of mainstream politics after becoming a lawyer and emphasized his commitment to be neutral and objective in discharging his duties.

“After I became a judge, I decided not to indulge in politics any longer. President Kufuor served under the PNDC as a Secretary; does that make him an NDC member? We need to discard some of these things and move ahead…they are petty. We need to look at issues with a nationalistic perspective. What I hate is partisanship. I am very objective and if I know I’m being offered a job I can’t perform, why should I go for it in the first place?” he asked rhetorically.

The Sole Commissioner also bemoaned the politicization of virtually every topical issue of national concern, and called for the de-politicization of the judgment debt saga since the money belongs to the nation and not to any political party.

“It’s very bad of us as a country, especially our partisan approach on the judgement debt issue…it has nothing to do with politics…We need to interrogate issues and get to the bottom of it without being partisan. Anyone who has any piece of information that can help should just step forward and do so and stop the politicking…The sweetness of the pudding is in the eating so Ghanaians only need to be hopeful that the job will be done,” the Appeals Court Judge said.

Meanwhile, Justice Appau has been given one year to complete his work.
